Numinous

About

Awe, but verified.

Numinous publishes the kind of fact that changes what you thought you knew — and, unusually for the genre, every one of them is traced back to the work that established it.

The internet is full of "amazing facts." Most of them are true-ish, sourced to another page that sourced it to another page, all the way back to a single unsourced paragraph from decades ago. We built Numinous to be the opposite: an editorial gate stands between every claim and this site, and it does not pass anything that can't be checked.

How we source

Every source is graded. Tier 1 is primary — a peer-reviewed paper, an official dataset, a primary document, a direct measurement. Tier 2 is a reputable institution or specialist writer citing tier 1. Tier 3 — an encyclopedia or the general press — can only ever start a trail; it never ends one. A fact does not publish unless at least one primary or reputable secondary source stands behind it, and aggregators are automatically demoted so a citation trail has to terminate in something that actually did the work.

How we illustrate

Where a photograph doesn't exist, we generate an illustration — and we label it. Any AI-generated image carries an ILLUSTRATION · AI mark. Real photographs carry nothing. We don't pass generated imagery off as a photo, ever.

Where to find us

Most people meet Numinous on Facebook, where the sources sit in the first comment of every post. This site is where the full, cited story lives.
