ILLUSTRATION · AICliff Palace at Mesa Verde has 150 rooms and 23 kivas, the National Park Service says.
Built by Ancestral Pueblo people, Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. It was likely a busy neighborhood home to over 100 people. The NPS notes that it was a village like any other, except for its size.
Most of Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings were built near seep springs, some of the only permanent water sources in the area. Those springs became increasingly important to Ancestral Pueblo people during the period when the cliff dwellings were built.
