The Louisiana Purchase treaty was signed on April 30, 1803. American negotiators Robert Livingston and James Monroe had originally been authorized to pay France up to $10 million for the port of New Orleans and the Floridas, the National Archives says.
Offered the entire territory of Louisiana instead, they agreed to $15 million. The purchase doubled the size of the United States and expanded the nation westward.
