The two names most bound up in the reading of ancient Egyptian met for the first time in the same room on the day one of them won. Champollion had come to announce the breakthrough that would carry his name; Young, the Englishman who had made real early progress on the Rosetta Stone, was in the seats. According to the Royal College of Physicians Museum, whose 2022 account traces Young's role in the decipherment story, it was the first time the two rivals had come face to face.
The occasion was Champollion's *Lettre à M. Dacier*, addressed to Bon-Joseph Dacier, the permanent secretary of the Académie. In it Champollion laid out the crucial claim: that hieroglyphs were not purely symbolic pictures but included signs that spelled out sounds — a phonetic alphabet. The British Museum, marking the bicentenary in 2022, confirms Champollion made the announcement on Friday, September 27, 1822, at the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and that his English rival Thomas Young was among those present.
Why the meeting mattered
Young had gotten there partly first. He had identified that the cartouches — the oval rings around certain glyph groups — contained royal names, and he had read some sounds correctly. But he stopped short of the general principle. Champollion pushed further, using the name Ptolemy on the Rosetta Stone and Cleopatra on an obelisk from Philae to cross-check individual sign-values, then extending the phonetic reading to native Egyptian names, not just foreign ones. That last step is what turned a clever trick into a working system, and it is what he unveiled that day.
The scene has a satisfying shape — the loser watching the winner take the prize — and it is genuinely documented across independent sources. How we know — and what the record corrects
It is worth being careful about exactly what happened in that room, because the popular retelling has drifted. The image of Champollion dramatically reading out a finished, triumphant letter to a hushed hall is, strictly, legend. Nicolas Grimal, permanent secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, clarified in the Académie's own 2022 commemoration *Autour de Champollion, deux cents ans après* that Champollion was in fact commenting on an eight-page draft before an audience that already had copies of the text in hand. It was a scholarly session, not a stage performance.
That does not diminish the moment. Champollion's letter to Dacier survives, and its date is fixed by that document itself; the 2022 commissioned check confirmed September 27, 1822 against the original. The presence of Young on that date is corroborated by three separate institutions with no reason to coordinate — the British Museum, the Royal College of Physicians Museum, and JSTOR Daily — each specifying that he was visiting Paris and that this was the first time the two men met.
What remains genuinely open is the older argument the meeting embodies: who deserves the credit. Young's supporters, then and since, held that he laid the groundwork and Champollion built on it without full acknowledgment. Champollion's defenders point out that grasping the general phonetic principle — and applying it to Egyptian names — was the leap that unlocked the whole language, and that this was Champollion's alone. Two centuries later, museum labels in London and Paris still lean in slightly different directions.
So the vivid detail to hold onto is not a speech but a seat: the rival who came closest, sitting in a Paris hall with the draft in his lap, listening to the man who finished the job.
