Somewhere in the White Mountains of eastern California, a bristlecone pine may be more than five thousand years old — and no one can prove it. In 2010, the dendrochronologist Tom Harlan reported an age of 5,062 years for a still-living Great Basin bristlecone (*Pinus longaeva*), which would make it older than Methuselah, the celebrated tree long treated as the oldest known individual on Earth. The catch is that the wood core Harlan measured has since vanished, so the record stands unverified and off the official list.
The story reaches back to the founder of bristlecone research himself. According to OLDLIST, the database of old trees maintained by Rocky Mountain Tree-Ring Research, the tree was cored by Edmund Schulman in the summer of 1957. Schulman was the scientist who, using tree-ring dating, had shown these gnarled, high-altitude pines to be the oldest non-clonal living things known. He died in 1958, before he could work up all his samples. Boxes of his cores sat in storage for half a century.
How a tree could be older than Methuselah and still not count
Around 2009, Tom Harlan began working through Schulman's undated cores. Dr. Peter M. Brown, who keeps OLDLIST, records Harlan's own words: "Tom reported to me in 2010 that the tree was still alive, and the age reported to me at that time was 5062 years old." That figure edges past Methuselah — whose peer-reviewed ring count puts it near 4,853 years — by roughly two centuries. In dendrochronology, age is not estimated by size or guesswork; it comes from counting and cross-dating annual growth rings, matching the pattern of thick and thin years against a master chronology so that each ring is pinned to a specific calendar year. Done properly, it is one of the most precise dating methods in science.
But precision requires the physical evidence, and that is exactly what went missing. Harlan died in 2013 without publishing the tree's details. Afterward, the core he had dated could not be found. Brown states the problem plainly on OLDLIST: "the core dated by Tom Harlan has not been located... Therefore, I have removed this tree from OldList until such time as it is able to be confirmed." A claim that would rewrite the top of the list is, for now, a number without its proof.
Why the missing core matters more than the missing name
The tree has no name — no equivalent of "Methuselah" — because it was never made famous, and its exact location has never been published, a deliberate protection against vandalism and souvenir hunters. So there is no marked trunk to point to, no plaque, and no surviving core to re-examine. HISTORY, revisiting the mystery in 2025, noted that Harlan "claimed to have found Schulman's 5,065-year-old bristlecone, but he too died before publishing its details," and that Brown keeps the unnamed tree off his official list until its existence can be confirmed. The vivid part is how ordinary the failure was. This is not a tale of a lost civilization or a burned library — it is a wood sample, no thicker than a pencil, that slipped through the cracks of a working scientist's office after he died. A single misplaced tube of dried pine may hold the oldest verified lifespan ever recorded, or it may not; without it, the difference is unknowable.
That is the seam still open to argument. If the core surfaces in some overlooked drawer, Methuselah loses its crown and the record books change. If it never does, the 5,062-year tree remains a rumor at the edge of the data — quite possibly alive right now, quietly adding a ring this year, keeping its own count that no human can currently confirm.
