The Amazon River alone discharges somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of all the fresh water the world's rivers deliver to the oceans.

Add up every river on Earth — the Nile, the Mississippi, the Yangtze, the Congo, all of them — and one South American river accounts for roughly a fifth of the fresh water they collectively pour into the sea. The Amazon does it by itself, discharging more than the next seven largest rivers combined.

The figure most often quoted traces back to a 1967 U.S. Geological Survey publication called "The Amazon, measuring a mighty river." That sixteen-page report put it plainly: the Amazon's flow "accounts for about 15 percent of all the fresh water discharged into the oceans by all the rivers of the world." More recent peer-reviewed work has revised the number upward. A 2019 study by Fanton d'Andon and colleagues in the journal Water pegged it at around 17 percent, and Ruiz-Barradas and coauthors reached the same figure in Scientific Reports the following year. In 2023, Xu, Hathorne, Laukert, and Frank, writing in Nature Communications, went as high as 20 percent.

Why one river carries so much of the world's fresh water

The answer is rain, and a lot of it. The Amazon basin drains about 40 percent of the South American continent, a catchment area larger than the contiguous United States. That whole expanse sits under the wettest tropical climate on the planet, where warm, moisture-laden air rises off the Atlantic and off the forest itself, then falls again as some of the heaviest sustained rainfall anywhere on Earth.

All that water collects into a single trunk stream fed by more than a thousand tributaries, several of which — the Madeira, the Negro, the Japurá — would rank among the world's great rivers on their own. The result is a discharge rate on the order of 209,000 cubic meters per second at the river's mouth, the largest of any river by volume. The flow is so immense and so concentrated that the freshwater plume pushes far out into the Atlantic; early sailors reported drawing drinkable water from the ocean before they could see land.

How we know the number, and why it keeps changing

The 15 percent figure and the newer 17-to-20 percent estimates aren't really in conflict — they reflect different tools and different definitions. The 1967 USGS report was a snapshot from an era of ship-based soundings and river gauges, and it was careful to say "about." The modern figures come from satellite altimetry, dense networks of hydrological stations, and global runoff models that can track discharge across seasons and years. Xu and colleagues' 2023 work in Nature Communications, for instance, was primarily a study of ocean chemistry that leaned on the Amazon's outsized contribution to global runoff.

The spread also depends on what you count. Estimates of total global river discharge to the oceans themselves carry real uncertainty, and the Amazon's own flow swings between wet and dry seasons. Divide a large, uncertain numerator by a large, uncertain denominator and you get a range rather than a single clean percentage. That is why an honest answer is "roughly a fifth," not a decimal point.

What remains genuinely open is the direction that fraction is heading. Deforestation in the basin can reduce the forest's own recycling of rainfall, while a warming atmosphere holds more moisture and can intensify tropical downpours — two forces pulling the Amazon's discharge in opposite directions. Researchers are still arguing over which wins out, and by how much. The one river that carries a fifth of the world's fresh water to the sea is also, it turns out, one of the hardest to predict.
