How we know a person survived 115.7°F

Frank Anderson, and Andrea Casolaro in *Annals of Emergency Medicine* in 1982, under a title that tells you they were careful: "Survival in a heat stroke victim with a core temperature in excess of 46.5°C." The phrase "in excess of" matters. The 46.5°C reading was not taken at his worst. It was recorded 25 minutes *after* active cooling had already begun. His true peak was almost certainly higher — the doctors simply never captured it, because by the time anyone put a thermometer in, the treatment was already pulling the number down.
The authors concluded that the case "represents the highest human body temperature elevation reported without permanent residua." Nearly three decades later, a 2009 case report by Chan and colleagues, describing a patient who survived 45°C, went looking for the record and landed back on the same 1980 Atlanta man, quoting Slovis directly: still the highest reported core temperature survived without permanent deficit. The patient's heat stroke, Chan's group noted, had likely been worsened by alcohol.
Guinness World Records lists the same event under "highest body temperature" and supplies a name the clinical paper withheld — Willie Jones — with the matching date, place, and 24-day hospital stay. Why surviving this is so unlikely
Heat stroke is not just discomfort. Once core temperature climbs past roughly 40–41°C, the cascade turns lethal fast: enzymes denature, cell membranes fail, the clotting system spirals out of control, and organs — kidneys, liver, brain — begin to shut down. The brain is especially unforgiving of heat, which is why survivors of severe heat stroke so often carry permanent cognitive or motor damage even when they live. That is the whole reason this case is remembered. Plenty of people have run temperatures this high. Almost none have come back from them intact.
