ILLUSTRATION · AIGray whales travel about 10,000 miles round-trip each year, NOAA Fisheries says.
Most eastern North Pacific gray whales spend the summer feeding in the northern Bering and Chukchi seas. In the fall they migrate south along the coast of North America to wintering and calving areas off Baja California, Mexico, and from mid-February to May they can be seen heading north again along the U.S. West Coast.
The round trip is about 10,000 miles, and in some cases upwards of 14,000 miles, one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal.
