ILLUSTRATION · AIThe adult human skeleton usually consists of 206 named bones, the National Cancer Institute's SEER training materials say.
The bones fall into two divisions. The 80 bones of the axial skeleton form the vertical axis of the body, including the bones of the head, the vertebral column, the ribs and the breastbone.
The remaining 126 bones make up the appendicular skeleton: the bones of the arms and legs, plus the shoulder and hip girdles that attach the limbs to the axial skeleton.
