The coral is the smaller part of the story. According to Australia's Reef Authority — the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, or GBRMPA — coral reefs comprise only about seven percent of the Marine Park and the surrounding World Heritage Area. The other ninety-three percent is something else entirely: seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, sandy plains, algal and sponge gardens, and vast stretches of inter-reefal and deep oceanic water.

That means the thing that made the Great Barrier Reef famous is a minority tenant in its own park. The reefs are the headliners, but they sit inside a much larger, more varied marine landscape that most people never picture when they hear the name.

Why coral is only seven percent of the reef

The number comes down to how the park is defined. The Marine Park isn't a fence drawn tightly around living coral. It's a management zone covering 344,400 square kilometers — an area larger than Italy — that stretches roughly 2,300 kilometers along the Queensland coast. When you protect a region that big, you're protecting far more than the reef structures themselves.

The GBRMPA lays this out plainly in its "Fascinating facts about the Great Barrier Reef" page: "While coral reefs initially made the Great Barrier Reef famous, they only comprise about seven per cent of the Marine Park and the World Heritage Area." The National Museum of Australia, in its 2023 "Defining Moments" entry on the Marine Park, repeats the same figure and the same total area, noting the park is "2300 kilometres long" with "an area of 344,400 square kilometres."

The remaining ninety-three percent does real ecological work. Seagrass meadows feed dugongs and green turtles and anchor sediment. Mangroves buffer the coast and nurse juvenile fish. The muddy inter-reefal floor between the coral outcrops hosts sponge and algal gardens that most visitors never see because they're not the postcard. Beyond the continental shelf, the deep oceanic zones drop away into water that has nothing to do with coral at all.

How we know the number is right

This isn't a rounded-off guess plucked from a brochure. The figure traces back to the seabed mapping and habitat surveys that underpin the park's own zoning plans. To manage a marine area, GBRMPA had to chart what's actually in it — where the reefs sit, where the seagrass grows, where the seafloor is bare sand. The seven-percent figure is the residue of that accounting: reef structures measured against everything else in the mapped total.

The concrete detail worth holding onto is the scale mismatch. Picture the reef as most people do — endless coral, from horizon to horizon. Now shrink that image down to a strip covering seven parts in a hundred, and fill the rest with open blue water, grass beds waving in the current, and dark mud dotted with sponges. That's closer to the truth of what the park protects.

The name "Great Barrier Reef" quietly oversells one habitat and undersells the rest. The corals are spectacular and fragile and worth every headline. But the park was drawn big for a reason: the reef doesn't function without the meadows, the mangroves, and the seafloor around it.

Here's the seam still open to argument. If coral is only seven percent, how should a warming, bleaching future be judged? Some argue the park's resilience lies precisely in that other ninety-three percent — the diversity that buffers the whole system. Others counter that losing the coral would gut what the World Heritage listing was built to protect, regardless of how much sand and seagrass remains. The number is settled. What it means for the reef's survival is not.
