The cathode that made the modern smartphone possible earned its inventor nothing. John Goodenough, working at Oxford around 1980, figured out that lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂) could store and release lithium ions reliably enough to power a rechargeable battery. That discovery is the heart of the cell in your pocket right now. But when the technology was patented, Goodenough held no financial stake in it — and he never saw a penny of the original battery's earnings.

How the discovery happened

In the late 1970s, Goodenough and his co-worker Koichi Mizushima were hunting for a material that could serve as a cathode in a lightweight, high-voltage rechargeable battery. They landed on lithium cobalt oxide, a layered compound that could shed lithium ions and take them back without falling apart. Their work appeared in the *Materials Research Bulletin* in 1980. The material delivered a higher voltage than anything then available, and it became the template that Sony commercialized into the first mass-market lithium-ion cell in 1991.

The patent that covers the invention is US 4,357,215, titled "Fast ion conductors," filed April 30, 1981. Google Patents' legal-status record lists Goodenough, Mizushima, and the University of Oxford as assignors, and shows the patent assigned in 1984 to the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. That assignment is the crux of the story.

Why Goodenough never earned a penny

Oxford, at the time, wasn't interested in paying to file and defend the patent. Money for that came instead from the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, the British government lab. As IEEE Spectrum recounted in its 2023 piece "Who Really Invented the Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery?," Harwell agreed to bankroll the filing on one condition: Goodenough had to sign away his financial rights. He did. In the magazine's blunt phrasing, he "never saw a penny of the original battery's earnings."

Design News told the same story that year in "Fifty Years Later: The Improbable Birth of the Lithium-Ion Battery," describing how Goodenough signed away his rights at the Harwell government lab, which then patented the technology. The rights flowed to the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the government body — not to the man who did the science.

The concrete detail worth sitting with: Goodenough made the decision because he cared more about getting the invention protected and out into the world than about who profited. And the world profited enormously. Lithium-ion is now a multibillion-dollar industry, embedded in phones, laptops, power tools, and electric cars. Goodenough went on to share the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for that body of work — at 97, the oldest Nobel laureate in history. The prize came with money. The cathode patent never did.

The seam still open to argue about

The clean version of this story is "inventor robbed of his due," but the record is more tangled than that, and reasonable people read it differently. Goodenough was not tricked; he agreed to the terms because Oxford wouldn't fund the patent and Harwell would. Whether that counts as a raw deal or a pragmatic trade depends on what you think a university should have done in 1981 with a discovery whose commercial future was, at the time, entirely speculative. Nobody in that room knew they were looking at the chemistry of the smartphone age.

There's also a broader argument the patent invites: who *really* deployed lithium-ion into your hand? Goodenough found the cathode; Akira Yoshino, at Asahi Kasei, built the safe, workable cell that Sony sold; Stanley Whittingham did foundational earlier work. All three shared the 2019 Nobel. The patent named the inventors and paid none of them for this particular material — which leaves the question of what an idea is worth, and to whom, still very much unsettled.
